Marriage & Citizenship: What You Need to Know

More than 65% of couples who get married in Gwinnett County each year include at least one person who is not a US citizen. The best news is, it’s pretty easy to get married in Gwinnett County before or during the citizenship process.

Why Couples Marry for Citizenship

Some couples are deeply in love.

Some are building a future step by step.

Some are making a practical decision that supports stability.

And all of it exists here in Gwinnett County.

When you combine citizenship with marriage, it can quickly increase the pressure a couple feels. You now have more paperwork, timelines, family expectations, questions that do not always have simple answers, and additional costs.

The Facts About Getting Married In Gwinnett County

The average wedding in Gwinnett County and the surrounding areas costs between $30,000 and $60,000. For many couples, this simply doesn’t make sense, especially when your focus is on stability, everyday expenses, and the cost of citizenship.

The truth is, it only costs between $66 and $466 to legally get married in Gwinnett County. Which means everything else couples spend on a wedding has nothing to do with making it official.

What You Actually Need to Get Married in Gwinnett County

So let’s keep getting married simple. Here’s what you need:

  • A valid marriage license in Gwinnett County or the county where you are getting married

  • A government issued ID for both people

  • A certified divorce decree if either person was previously married

  • A legally recognized officiant

That's it!

What's a Legal Officiant?

Now, here’s the part that many people do not realize at first.

Getting your marriage license doesn’t make your marriage legal.

An officiant is required to make your marriage legal, and both of you must be able to fully understand what is being said during the ceremony. An officiant is a person who is legally allowed to perform a marriage, including judges, magistrates, city recorders, former governors, or an ordained minister or member of the clergy.

Here are three options to make your marriage legal in Gwinnett County:

Option 1: Gwinnett County offers free group weddings on select Fridays, but reservations open three weeks in advance and usually fill within a day. These ceremonies are shared with other couples, so it is a great option if timing works and you are comfortable in a group setting.

Option 2: Most officiants travel to you, which means you will need to provide a location, often a park or public space. This can be a nice option on a good day, but it does depend on the weather and typically costs between $150 and $300.

Option 3: Some officiants (like myself) offer a private location near the courthouse for the same or lower cost. This allows you to get married the same day in a simple, intimate setting without worrying about weather or scheduling delays.

If English is not your first language, communication can feel unclear very quickly. That is why having an officiant (like me) who can support you with a translation device can make a big difference. It’s not only required for the couple to know what is being said, but also helps both people feel confident, included, and fully present.

A Local Perspective That Matters

After officiating weddings in Gwinnett County for ten years, I have seen every kind of couple who are dealing with citizenship and marriage. And no two are ever the same.

Some do not mind saying “I DO!” in a room packed with strangers if it saves money.

Some are ready to get married today!

Some want something small and personal.

And some want a full celebration to remember.

But underneath it all, the goal is the same. To make their marriage legal.

Once you understand how it works, the process feels simpler and a lot more within reach.

So, if this brought a little clarity to you, please share it with someone who may need it too.
