You are engaged!

That moment you said yes is still playing in your mind, and now everything feels exciting, new, and full of possibility. This is not just about planning a wedding. This is about creating a day that reflects your love, your story, and the life you are about to build together.
If you are getting married in Georgia, you are in the right place. The process is simple when you know what to expect, and making the right choices early can keep everything feeling joyful instead of overwhelming.
Let’s walk through what you need so you can move forward with confidence.
What You Will Need to Get Married in Georgia
Georgia makes it easy for couples to marry, whether you live here or you are traveling in for your wedding.
To apply for your marriage license, you will need:
Both partners present in person
A valid government issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, passport, or state ID
Your official divorce decree if either of you has been previously married
To get married once you have your marriage license, you will need:
A wedding officiant
There is no waiting period and no witnesses required in Georgia, which means you can get married the same day you receive your license.
There is also no residency requirement. However, if you don't live in Georgia (have a Georgia state ID) there is one very important detail to keep in mind.
If you do not live in Georgia, you must apply for your marriage license in the same county where your ceremony will take place. This means your choice of county matters more than you may think!
Choosing the Right County for Your Wedding
Many couples focus on the venue, the dress, and the guest list. Few realize that the county they choose can impact how smooth and stress free their experience will be.
Two of the most common options in the Atlanta area are Gwinnett County and Fulton County. Each offers a very different timeline for getting your legal documents after your ceremony.
Gwinnett County
Gwinnett County is ideal for couples who want efficiency, clarity, and peace of mind.

Their benefits include:
Marriage License (what you have to get before you get married) and Certified marriage licenses (what you need after you are married) are available the same day during courthouse hours.
The process is quick and easy to navigate.
It is a great option for large weddings, intimate ceremonies, elopements, and same day marriages.
For couples who want everything completed without delay, this can make a meaningful difference!
Our Lawrenceville location is located just two blocks from the Gwinnett County Courthouse, and we offer same day officiating for couples who are ready to make it official without added stress. We are also close to many venues in the area making finding and securing an officiant for your large wedding quick and easy.
Fulton County
Fulton County is often chosen for its central location in Atlanta.
Their process:

Marriage licenses (what you have to get before you get married) are issued the same day.
Certified Marriage License (what you get after you are married) are mailed to you and can take up to thirty days after the completed marriage license is turned in.
If you will need your certified marriage license soon after your wedding for name changes, travel, legal updates, or because you live out of state, this timeline is important to consider before choosing your county.
Why This Decision Matters for Your Wedding
This is more than a legal step. It is about protecting your peace during one of the most meaningful seasons of your life.
Choosing the right county allows you to:
Avoid unnecessary delays after your wedding
Stay aligned with your timeline and future plans
Focus your energy on celebrating the next chapter in your life
When the details are handled with care, your wedding day can feel exactly the way it should feel. Present, meaningful, and completely centered on your love.
A Simple and Meaningful Activity for You Both
Before you move forward with the next step in planning, take a quiet moment together.
Sit down and answer this question as a couple.

What do we want the first day of our marriage to feel like?
Write your answers separately, then share them with each other. This one question will guide so many of your decisions, including where and how you choose to say your vows.
Congratulations on your engagement!
